Ces photographies ont été réalisées grâce à la bourse du Prix « Résidence pour la Photographie » de la Fondation des Treilles dont j'ai été lauréate en 2015.
Elles ont remporté en 2019 le Prix Eurazeo pour la Photographie.
DANS LE MIROIR DES RIZIERES est le second volet d’un cycle dédié à mon histoire familiale, intimement liée à celle de l'immigration italienne en France pendant l'entre-deux guerres. Réactivant des éléments d'archives, ce travail est un essai visuel interrogeant plus globalement les notions d'héritage, d'identité, d'exil, de la perte des lieux où l'on est né, où l'on a vécu. Quelle histoire, quel imaginaire produire, transmettre quand tout vous manque ?
Au coeur des rizières du Piémont italien, je revisite à l'ombre de ma grand-mère maternelle, la figure de la mondina (ouvrière saisonnière) ayant inspiré nombre d'artistes, des chants populaires "La Bella Ciao à des oeuvres littéraires ou cinématographiques, comme le film réalisé par Giuseppe De Santis, "Riz amer" ("Riso amaro", 1949), tourné avec l’actrice italienne Silvana Mangano. Dans les espaces d'une antique et vaste propriété rizicole datant du XVè siècle, j’ai laissé libre cours à mon imaginaire. De mon ensemble d’images trouvées, transformées, produites, j’ai construit mon propre album, ma propre histoire. Comme une invitation à repenser une mémoire familiale.

IN THE MIRROR OF THE RICE FIELDS is the second part of a “re-visiting” of my family history, one intimately linked to that of Italian immigration in France between World War I and World War II. It draws its source in a buried memory, that of my Italian origins, on both my mother’s and my father’s sides, and it addresses exile, identity, the loss of one’s birthplace, of one’s home. How to create, transmit a narrative, an imaginary world when lacking it all?
At the heart of the Italian Piedmont rice-fields, in my maternal grandmother’s shadow, I revisit the figure of the “mondina” (a seasonal female rice-field worker) , which inspired many artists, film-makers and musicians, series of popular songs such as “Bella Ciao”, as well as Italian literary works or films, such as the film directed by Giuseppe De Santis, “Riso Amaro”, (Bitter Rice) in 1949, starring Silvana Mangano. Among the spaces of a vast and ancient rice-producing property dating back to the XVth century, I have given free rein to my imagination. From this set of found, transformed, created pictures I have built my own album, my own story. Like an invitation to revisit, to rethink a family memory.
